Looking back at the preliminary task, what have i learnt in the progression from it to full product.

Looking back at the college magazine i created. i have learnt to do so much more in Photoshop CS4 as a whole. i find many things easier than before and this might be because i am using a layout that i am accustomed to/used to. My photography is a lot better on may main task than my preliminary task. i think this because i arranged the pictures much more efficiently rather than just "sticking them on" the page. For example in my double page spread i did the best i could to try and make it so that the person (James Shreeve aka MARCUS HENSON) was leaning on the edge of the page in his (laid back) lifestyle of the streets doing whatever/whenever. the fonts i used in my main task seemed to "fit the part" a lot better than in my preliminary task. the preliminary task had such a cartoon looking font for the audience (even though it was a college magazine). however the font JUICE that was used in my main task was such a "street" font which made it quite hip/gangster which was correct for the audience of gangster rap lovers. i tried to use a three colour scheme in my preliminary task which did not work very well to be honest, however, in my main task it worked very well with the white, blue, and gold!

i had to research many music magazines that fit my audience quite well such as "rolling stone" and "VIBE" before i could really construct a good design but eventually i managed to make it look quite professional.

DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD

I really like this double page spread. Although it is dark it is also welcoming. i believe this to be becasue the whole page isnt just black and white; there are more colours in there (gold and blue). The title Marcus Hewson is written in the same simplicity font of JUICE to keep the trend going. i didnt make the Q&A too long because repetition could be a big thing and get very tedious very quickly. I found it hard to portray marcus hewsons position in this double page spread until i realised his background. being from 'the streets' he used to stand out in a crowd as a gangster. i tried to make it look as though he was leaning o the edge of the page to make it look like although he is now famous, he still stays cool! i like the way iu made the white just reflect off his face a little bit making it look like the light is coming in on him now that he has his fandom. i really like that connotation. the mode of address for him is usually quite hard to take however this double page spread Q&A gives off a sort of serious mode of address making people, for the first time ever, able to see the man behind the hoody.

FRONT COVER FINISHED

I tried to use quite an urban looking mastehead, I think it worked quite well as I went for the 'street' look (hence 'streetwise'). The font used was JUICE from http://www.dafont.com/. when looking at colour i firstly played around with blues/greens etc, i used this font because it is quite 'gangster' and after all the magazine audience is based on this type of character. The face i used was from my 'model' James Shreeve. he is very spotty and has very blood shot eyes which i tried to correct here. I also played about with the contrast to make him stand out more. Cover Line - the first cover line (about legal ways to earn money) was used to fill some space in the first third. I think this cover line works well agaist the background (colourwise) because the black text cotrasts well with the white Background. The bold LEGAL (also used the font JUICE) is one of three peices of text that are are Gold/Yellow adding a bit of colour to the Front Cover. Cover Line (2) - MARCUS HEWSON, He is without a doubt really who this whole issue is about. (Picture - left). He was originally going to be used as the MAIN COVER LINE however i thought that the main cover line looks better with less words. it stands out a lot more this way and the signature Marcus Hewson (yellow text) is used throughout the magazine. I think a decent tagline was in order for this magazine as its new and it is trying to get a great USP (urban street music magazine) - there are so many people/celebrity singers whom have been on there high horses for so long so i believed it was time to bring these 'up in te air' wanabes down to earth like many people from urban streets. Where rap began!

FONT IDEAS

These are a few ideas of fonts of which i chose from www.dafont.com. i have decided to go with a kind of ghetto/street kind of look. kind of like graffiti but more gangster such as the find you would find in places such as New York or even Bronx, maybe even corresponding with Londons East end or even some peices of manchester :)

Demographic/Psychographic Profile of my Audience

DEMOGRAPHICS

Male: ........................................................90%
Female: ........................................................10%
average age: ........................................................20-27
full time worker: ........................................................35%
part time worker: ........................................................52%
Students: ........................................................13%
Location: ........................................................Urban Streets
Marital Status: ........................................................Single

PSYCHOGRAPHICS

the readers of which are targeted for my music magazine are generally male readers. I would expect the perfect reader for this magazine to be a young male who is single and around 23 years old. This man, who lives in a terrace house or flat, does not have a very high income as he probably blows his money on "gangster" clothes that he does not need but we still advertise in our magazine. I would say that because this guy doesnt have a steady income then he wont want to buy fancy foods and cook feasts everynight so i would say he is more of the takeaway eater e.g. McDonalds and Burger King maybe even Chinese. this man i would expect to be interested in hip hop and rap music and like artists such as Lil Wayne and T.I.
